Kids and Electronics!

Our school district held a Cyber Savvy Parent Workshop that was eye-opening and super helpful for my family. I wanted to share some of the tools they shared with us for other parents out there! Below are links and a PDF to create your own family electronics media plan and a calculator for recommended time your kids should use electronics.

From American Academy of Pediatrics: Media should work for you & work within your family values & parenting style. When media is used thoughtfully & appropriately, media can enhance daily life. But when used inappropriately or without thought, media can displace many important activities such as face-to-face interaction, family-time, outdoor-play, exercise, unplugged downtime & sleep.

By creating a Personalized Family Media Use Plan, you can be aware of when you are using media to achieve your purpose. This requires parents & users to think about what they want those purposes to be. The tool below will help you to think about media & create goals & rules that are in line with your family’s values.

You can also calculate the electronic media time your child should have based on their ages and your lifestyle.

Alternately, if you want to say off electronics to make your media plan, download this PDF version you can print and fill out together. This Family Media Plan Age 6-12 yo PDF is for ages 6-12 years old.

Doctor Recommended

I had a great experience today – my approach is DOCTOR RECOMMENDED!  I went to my doctor, Dr. Michelle Draeb of Denver Family Medicine, Board Certified Family Physician, degree from University of Colorado School of Medicine and Family Practice residency completed at St Joseph Hospital, who I have been a patient of for 17 years for an annual physical today. It was a good report so I am happy for my health…and something else exciting happened!

As many know, I believe in the fitness and nutrition programs through Team Beachbody that allowed me to achieve the best health of my life even with a busy, working mom schedule…and now I have the endorsement of a medical professional!! I love that my doctor was so excited about my health and that she wanted to hear more about how I did it. So I shared…

After we discussed the balanced nutrition of the 21 Day Fix program and Shakeology, she said that is exactly what she advises her patients to do and loves how easy the nutrition plan is to follow with the serving size containers.  She wanted to hear more about what I do for exercise and I told her about the 30-minute, at-home DVD workouts with either a resistance band or dumbbell weights.  She was impressed with how anyone can do it and how it is so convenient.

I told her that I believe in it so much that I decided to become an accountability coach for Beachbody programs and I help people change their routine to make this a lifestyle change for them, too.  She was on the edge of her seat and excitedly asked me if she can refer patients to me! Um, YES!!  She took all the business cards I had in my purse! She was most intrigued by the aspect of accountability because she says she advises people all day about the healthy choices we discussed, but she cannot possibly check in with patients to help them implement those recommendations.

That’s where I step in! She jokingly asked me to come to her office and sit in the waiting room every day to talk more about it. I think she could sense my enthusiasm about this work I do!! I am so excited about this partnership with a doctor I trust and the programs I believe in!

No Equipment Workout

Don’t undo the results you have achieved so far! No equipment, no problem!

When we are on the go, it is harder to fit in a workout – especially when we have no equipment.  But that is no excuse!  Here is a great high intensity workout that can be done in either 20 minutes or 36 minutes depending on the time you have.  You can do this workout anywhere – a hotel room, your living room or out in a beautiful park or on the beach.  No equipment, no problem!  Little space, no problem  No excuses…be active!

If you don’t recognize some of these moves like burpees or skater jumps, Google them – there are video explanations.

Accountability

Accountability is the glue that ties commitment to results.

It is what drives success and sets the Beachbody programs I endorse apart from other programs. In addition to amazing workout programs that come with balanced nutrition plans, Beachbody connects every customer with a free accountability partner, or coach, to support you as you reach your goals.

As I wrote in my “About Me” page, I tried so many programs and yo-yoed up and down because I did not have consistent accountability keeping me on track. Change isn’t easy. But with the support of someone who has gone through exactly what you are going through, someone who has supported others like you to achieve their goals, you will meet your goals.

With your commitment and the motivation of a coach like me, you are less likely to veer off track. And if you do happen to get off track, I am here for anything you need.
The team of coaches I am a part of are all focused on the same goal – helping people achieve and sustain a healthier and happier lifestyle. I am passionate about making sure every individual’s unique goals are understood and tailor nutrition and workout advice accordingly.

I meet people where they are – there is no one equation that promises success. Fortunately, I will take the time to understand your challenges and help you make the small revisions to be better than you were yesterday.

My Transformation Story

When I became a mom, my body and fitness level changed drastically. I did not have an easy pregnancy and ended up on bed rest for the last 2 months. I gained over 60 lbs (I stopped weighing myself later in my pregnancy because I didn’t want to know anymore!). I managed to lose most of the weight but was still 15 lbs over my pre-pregnancy weight when I became pregnant with my second child 2 years later. Again, I gained a significant amount of weight with the pregnancy. For the first year, I didn’t worry much about the extra weight I was carrying because I was focused on raising my young family while working full-time.

When my daughter turned two, I decided I could not call it “baby weight” anymore and started my 3 year journey of failed and frustrating weight loss attempts. I counted calories, steps, points, tried supplements and cleanses, had intermittent success committing to a workout plan and ultimately yo-yoed up and down.

When I turned 40 years old and my daughter was approaching her fifth birthday, I realized I had to do something different to feel better about myself. I wanted to find a way to have a sustainable healthy lifestyle. I built my own plan consisting of a low calorie, low carb, low fat diet and high intensity workouts. I logged every calorie I put into my mouth or burned off with my workouts so I could reach a target calorie number that I believed would get me to my goal. With this unbalanced, low-calorie diet, I ended up at a plateau after a few pounds weight loss. I was torturing myself by counting calories and weighing myself as often as I walked by the scale. I was so frustrated because the harder I worked, the more discouraged I got when the weight would not come off.

A friend of mine had success using a more balanced fitness + nutrition + support approach and she became a coach. I reached out to hear to learn more and decided I would try it for a month. It was amazing to see results in the first DAYS! At that time I was still obsessively counting calories thinking this was the answer. But what I found was that I could trust the process and forget all of the calculations that were stressing me out.

The nutrition plan and workouts have allowed me to exceed my fitness goals and reach a body size that I have never been as an adult. The benefits of the balanced nutrition and a superfood shake in my life are unmatched. I am not a shake person but found that this one reduces cravings and tastes like a treat while I am drinking super foods and vegetables.

The difference for me was in learning balanced nutrition, working out for only 30 minutes and having a personal coach that motivated and supported me. The nutrition and workout plan has allowed me to eat more food than I was before and workout for shorter periods of time. I still cannot believe it. It is a sustainable plan that is now my forever lifestyle for a full and healthy life!
