As I sit at home with my sick daughter…I started to think about our immune systems. Winter time takes a toll on our systems with all of these sicknesses going around. So what can we do?
The best defense is PREVENTION by maintaining a healthy diet and eat immune boosting foods year around…here are some tips!
1. Drink plenty of fluids. This prevents germs from having a place to enter the body because your respiratory tract is moist (I know, that word). The amount of water you should consume daily (in ounces) is equal to 1/2 your body weight in pounds. For example, if you weight 150 lbs, you should consume 75 ounces of water a day (150/2 = 75 oz). If you are sick, drink hot liquids like green tea, or broth.
2. Eat your protein. Protein is great for your muscles and your immune system. It provides the building blocks needed for the antibodies to fight off infections. Failing to get enough can leave your systems compromised. Protein can come from meat, legumes, eggs, chicken or nuts and seeds.
3. Eat plenty of fruits and veggies. This gives your body all the antioxidants it needs to fight off infections and keep you healthy. Antioxidants seek out and destroy anything that looks suspicious. Lean towards choosing fruits and veggies rich in Vitamin C during flu and cold season.
4. Drink Shakeology. Many people do not get enough vegetables in their diet. Shakeology fills in those gaps because it is a dried whole food and the equivalent to five plates of salad and contains a bunch of antioxidants and phytonutrients…the natural stuff that prevents illness!
5. Get some exercise. Exercise trains your system to optimally fight stressors and allows you to be at a lower stress level when not under stress. Exercise also serves to boost your immune system because you sleep better. 6. Sleep is necessary! Simply put, sleep deprivation suppresses immune system function. Our immune system is designed to protect us from colds, flu, and other ailments, but when it is not functioning properly, it fails to do its job. The consequences can include more sick days.
